Mr. Smithers was a Bus Driver for 30 years until retiring in 1979. He was a communicant of Our Lady of Peace RC Church in Fords. He was a veteran of the US Navy serving during WWII. He was predeceased by his brothers, Ernest “ Bob” Smithers and Richard Smithers. Surviving are his wife, Bernice Hand Smithers, his son and daughter-in-law, Jack and Linda Smithers of Branchburg, his daughter and son-in-law, Janice and Alan Nygard of Edison, his granddaughters, Sherry Daciuk of Metuchen, Tara Barry of Sayreville, and Krista Nygard of Edison and his two great grandchildren, Jonathan and Emma Barry.

John W. Smithers, age 86 of Fords, died on Tuesday at JFK Medical Center in Edison. He was born in Elizabeth, where he resided, until moving to Fords 53 years ago.| Flynn and Son Funeral Homes |
