Funerals

What purpose does a funeral serve?
A funeral provides a place for family and friends to gather for support and to reminisce; an opportunity to celebrate the life and accomplishments of a loved one; a chance to say goodbye; and the focal point from which the healing process can begin. The funeral identifies that a person's life has been lived, not that a death has occurred. It is also important to notify the community as there are people beyond the immediate family who have the right to grieve a death. For instance, what would have happened in the United States if there had not been a funeral for President John F. Kennedy?

How can I best shop and compare funeral service providers?
Talking with friends who have used the services of a funeral home or your personal experience from attending funeral services of friends or relatives at a variety of funeral homes are excellent methods of comparison. You might also consider stopping by a funeral home unannounced to experience how you are treated. You can also call the National Funeral Directors Association at 1-800-228-6332, or the New Jersey State Funeral Directors Association at 1-800-734-3712, both of which have standards of ethics, to see whether your local funeral home is a member.

Why are funerals so expensive?
There is a great range in prices for services and merchandise depending on the type of funeral you purchase. The perception that funerals are too expensive usually can be attributed to a lack of familiarity with the normal price range. If you find that the price for certain services and merchandise seem too high, you should check into different types of funerals until you find a price that fits your budget.

What happens if a death occurs out of state or out of the country?
If a death occurs when you are away from home, Flynn and Son together with our affiliates will have your loved one returned to New Jersey as quickly as possible. You are not alone; our trained staff will supervise every detail.

Cremation

Are cremations done individually?
Yes. Laws require that only one casket or container can be cremated at a time.

Is embalming necessary for cremation?
No. It is your choice. It may depend on such factors as whether the family selected a service with a public viewing and an open casket, or to enhance the deceased's appearance for a private family viewing. It would also have to be considered if the deceased is going to be transported by air or rail, or because of the length of time prior to the cremation.

Do I have to make different funeral arrangements if I choose cremation?
It really depends entirely on how you wish to commemorate a life. One of the advantages of cremation is that it provides you with increased flexibility when making your funeral arrangements. For example, you might choose to have a funeral service before the cremation; a memorial service at the time of cremation or after the cremation with the urn present; or a committal service at the final disposition of cremated remains. Funeral or memorial services can be held in a place of worship or a funeral home.
