In 1900, James J. Flynn, Sr. opened his own funeral service firm in a storefront in Perth Amboy. He was joined by his son, James J. Flynn, Jr., (Jay) in 1925, who started as an apprentice, became licensed in 1931, and took over as manager in 1933.
The company then became known as Flynn and Son Funeral Home. As case volume rose and with the change from having funerals in residences to using a funeral home, the facilities were expanded.
In 1949, Flynn and Son opened a second location 3 miles away in the town of Fords. James J. Flynn, Jr. had become active in the community and politics, and was elected mayor of Perth Amboy in 1950. He was subsequently elected for each of the following five terms, retiring in 1970.
The addition of a third generation occurred in 1965 when Jay's son Dennis S. Flynn joined the firm. He was named Vice President and Manager of the funeral home in Perth Amboy. In October 2000, Dennis retired after 35 years of service to the funeral home and community.
In 1967, Jay's youngest son, Brendan J. Flynn, also joined the firm as Vice President and Manager of the Fords location. With Dennis' retirement in October 2000, Brendan continued as President of the company keeping up the tradition of service that was set by his father and grandfather 100 years ago.
In 1992, Brendan's son, Brendan, Jr. joined the company. In October 2000, he took over the responsibilities of his uncle's position and serves as Vice President of the company.
Dennis and Brendan's nephew, James J. Flynn, IV came on board in 1995 and in October 2000 was named Manager of the funeral home in Perth Amboy.
In 2001 Flynn and Son acquired a third location, 2 miles away from Fords in the town of Metuchen, of which Brendan, Jr. became Manager.
